This allowance is granted to the parent or guardian of children until the end of Junior High School (the first 31st of March after their child turns 15). Eligibility depends on income. As a rule, the allowance is only given to those living in Japan. However, there are some exceptions such as for children on overseas exchange programs. The allowance is paid three times per year, on the 15th of February, June, and October. Each payment is for the eligible time period up until the month before the payment (i.e. the payment in June is for the period from February through May, and so on.)
(2) Child Support Allowance (“Jido-fuyo-teate”)
This allowance is granted to single parent families. It is paid until the 31st of March after the child turns 18. If the child has a moderate or severe disability, it is paid until the child turns 20. Furthermore, it is also paid if the parent has a severe disability. Eligibility depends on income. The allowance is paid on the 11th of January, March, May, July, September, and November for the time period up until the month before the payment.
(3) Special Child Support Allowance (“Tokubetsu-jido-fuyo-teate”)
This allowance is paid to the parent or guardian of a child under the age of 20 with a mental or physical disability. Eligibility depends on income and is not paid when the child is institutionalized. The allowance is paid in April, August, and December for the time period up until the month before the payment.
‘Current Status Report’ for the Child Allowance (“Jido-teate / Tokurei-kyufu Genkyo-todoke”)
